New Copper Queens head coach, Norah Hauptle, has been tasked with revolutionizing Zambia's women’s football team by introducing a stronger tactical approach to their gameplay. Sports Minister Elvis Nkandu has highlighted the need for the team to rely less on individual brilliance and more on cohesive team strategies to achieve long-term success.
Nkandu noted that much of the Copper Queens’ past achievements, including their bronze medal at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), have been fueled by the exceptional performances of star players. However, he emphasized that building a tactical structure is key to sustaining and expanding the team’s success on the continental and global stage.
Speaking to ZNBC, Nkandu said, “The Copper Queens can become one of the most feared teams on the continent if the coach is given time and space to implement a playing philosophy.”
Hauptle’s challenge is clear: to transition the team from one dependent on moments of individual brilliance to a tactically organized force that can dominate opponents consistently.
High Expectations for WAFCON and the World Cup
Nkandu also stated that Hauptle has the potential to win the hearts of Zambian football fans by achieving two key milestones: winning the next WAFCON and taking the Copper Queens beyond the group stages at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
With Zambia now home to world-class players such as Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji, the foundation is set for the Copper Queens to make a significant leap in global women’s football. Hauptle’s ability to harness this talent and build a cohesive unit will be critical to her success.
The journey ahead is not without challenges, but with the full support of fans and stakeholders, Hauptle has the opportunity to elevate Zambia’s women’s football to new heights. The spotlight is on her to deliver a tactical identity that can inspire not just the Copper Queens but also the next generation of Zambian footballers.
The Future Awaits
As the Copper Queens prepare for upcoming competitions, the pressure is on Hauptle to translate her vision into results. With time, resources, and the support of the nation, the Copper Queens could very well cement their place among the elite teams in women’s football.
