The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has
hailed the Zambia U17 boys’ national team for their outstanding performance in the 2024 COSAFA Championship, where they emerged as champions after defeating Angola 2-1 at Soweto Stadium in Johannesburg. This victory marks Zambia’s fourth COSAFA U17 Boys’ title, adding to previous wins in 2017, 2019, and 2022.
FAZ President Andrew Kamanga expressed pride in the team, commending their hard work and dedication. He noted that the victory added to Zambia’s impressive COSAFA trophy haul for 2024, which includes titles in senior women’s, U20 women’s, and U17 girls’ categories. Kamanga attributed the success to FAZ’s grassroots development initiatives and a robust 10-year strategic plan aimed at nurturing talent across the country.
“Our technical directorate has tapped into our decentralization program, ensuring talent is identified nationwide,” Kamanga said. He extended his gratitude to the provinces, clubs, government, and the entire football family for their continued support of Zambian football.
The tournament also highlighted exceptional individual performances, with Mapalo Simute from Mkushi earning the Player of the Tournament award and Abel Nyirongo taking home the top scorer accolade with seven goals.
With 2024 closing on a high note, Kamanga expressed optimism for 2025, emphasizing that the foundation laid this year positions Zambian football for even greater success in the future.
Zambia’s victory not only secures their place in the upcoming U17 Africa Cup of Nations but also reinforces their dominance in the COSAFA region.
