The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has revealed a significant increase in the prize money for the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to take place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from February 1-28, 2025. According to CAF, the prize for the tournament winner has been raised by 75%, with the champions now set to receive USD 3.5 million.
It was also reported that the total prize pool for CHAN 2024 has been increased by 32%, bringing the total to USD 10.4 million. This decision highlights CAF's commitment to investing in African football and rewarding teams for their performances.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe stated that the CHAN tournament plays a critical role in developing Africa-based football players and nurturing young talent. He emphasized that the competition would significantly contribute to the global competitiveness of African football while attracting fans, sponsors, and stakeholders both within the continent and globally.
In his remarks, Motsepe outlined the importance of CHAN in CAF’s broader strategy to grow the appeal of African football, making it more marketable and engaging for audiences worldwide.
COSAFA Teams to Compete
CAF has confirmed that Angola, Madagascar, and Zambia will represent the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) at CHAN 2024. The draw for the group stage will take place on January 15, 2025, where the teams will learn their opponents.
Qualified Teams
It was announced that 17 teams have already secured their spots in the tournament, including the hosts—Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda—as well as countries like Morocco, Guinea, Senegal, Nigeria, DR Congo, and Zambia. CAF also noted that two additional countries would join the competition after the final qualifying matches.
