The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has expressed immense pride and congratulated Copper Queens captain Barbra Banda and assistant referee Diana Chikotesha for their historic achievements at the 2024 CAF Awards.

In a statement, FAZ President Andrew Kamanga acknowledged that the duo had made history in their respective fields by clinching top honors. Kamanga reportedly described their achievements as remarkable milestones for Zambian football.

He is quoted as saying that, on behalf of the FAZ executive committee and the entire Zambian football family, he extended heartfelt congratulations to the two ambassadors of the sport. Kamanga highlighted Banda’s recognition as the CAF Women’s Footballer of the Year, calling it an extraordinary chapter in her already inspiring journey of resilience and determination.

He further praised Chikotesha for her exceptional contributions to officiating, noting her presence at major global events such as the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the Olympics, and the recently concluded Men’s AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, where she officiated the final as an assistant referee. Kamanga reportedly referred to her accomplishments as a testament to her stature and influence in the game.

The FAZ president also emphasized Banda’s role as an inspirational figure for young Zambians, particularly aspiring footballers. He remarked that her success serves as a perfect example of how hard work and dedication can lead to greatness, resonating deeply with the youth.

Kamanga reportedly concluded by stating that these achievements capped off an impressive year for Zambian football, which had seen various national teams qualify for CAF competitions. He expressed optimism for building on these successes in the coming year.

Banda’s recognition as CAF Women’s Footballer of the Year was a significant moment, as she beat Morocco’s Sana Mssoudy and Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie to claim the award. During the same event, Banda was also named in the CAF/FIFPRO Africa XI 2024.

Her accomplishments in 2024 included being named BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year, earning a spot in the FIFPRO World Best XI, and winning the NWSL Most Valuable Player award in the USA. She is now the first Zambian woman to win a CAF award, joining the ranks of Kalusha Bwalya, Clifford Mulenga, and Patson Daka as previous Zambian CAF honorees.

FAZ Communications Manager Sydney Mungala issued the statement on behalf of the organization.
