Augustine Mulenga: AmaZulu Striker Eyes National Team Comeback

15.01.2025 | Football DNA ⚽️

AmaZulu striker Augustine Mulenga remains optimistic about his chances of earning a spot in Zambia’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Despite limited game time at his club—having played only one match this season—the 34-year-old is determined to impress both his club coaches and Zambia’s national team selectors.

Mulenga’s absence from the Chipolopolo squad over the past three years has been largely influenced by the team’s transition toward younger talent under coach Avram Grant. With Zambia already securing their spot at the AFCON in Morocco, Mulenga knows the odds may not be in his favor, but he’s not giving up without a fight.

A Burning Desire to Represent Zambia

For Mulenga, playing for his national team is a dream that fuels his drive. Reflecting on Zambia’s qualification for AFCON, he said:

"Yes, being a soccer player, it's every player's dream to play for their national team, and when the nation qualified for the AFCON, I'm sure each and everyone always tries to work extra hard so that he can have that opportunity to represent the country."

He added: "I'm sure, even to me, I'm going to work so hard and see when the time comes if I'm going to be selected or not, but I have confidence in myself that I will be there."

Recovering and Ready to Fight

After battling an injury that kept him sidelined for much of the first half of the season, Mulenga is now fully recovered. He’s focused on regaining his form and hopes to earn the trust of AmaZulu’s co-coaches, Vusumuzi Vilakazi and Arthur Zwane, to secure regular playing time.

"Yes, it starts from the club, and in the first round I haven't played much games because of the injury, but now I've recovered and I'm sure I'll start playing soon," Mulenga explained.

He emphasized: "When the coaches give me that opportunity, and I'm back on the field, I'm going to try by all means to give my best and find myself back in the national team."

A Slim Yet Hopeful Chance

Mulenga’s road to the 2025 AFCON squad is undoubtedly steep, but his determination and experience could make him a valuable asset. With 34 years of age and years of international exposure under his belt, he brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership that could complement Zambia’s youthful squad.

For now, his focus remains on delivering standout performances at AmaZulu, showing coach Grant and the Chipolopolo selectors that he still has what it takes to compete at the highest level.

Zambia fans will be watching closely to see if Mulenga’s hard work pays off, and whether he can add another chapter to his national team journey.
